Years later, he met his third wife through the colony, the one who would be with him until the end. Andy was a chronic practical joker, once conning a local friend toward eating a horse-manure sandwich disguised as a hamburger. He jokingly tossed around words like “fag” but quietly stood up against religious leaders who preached against gay marriage because they hurt some of Andy’s closest friends who are gay. Andy often said he was not Taylor, nowhere near as good as him, although there were parts of him in that character that, tellingly, bears his first name. In thousands of interviews, he sprinkled clues about his true self, sometimes speaking candidly about his artistic struggles and self-doubt.
He’s happy to snap your photo and share a little southern hospitality. While we realize that many thousands of people around the country are mourning his passing, we Roanoke Islanders know that we have lost a part of our island's culture. In 2002 Griffith had a North Carolina highway named after him - The Andy Griffith Parkway, U.S. 52, in Mt. Airy.

We visited the world’s largest open face white granite quarry. It seems Andy Griffith wasn’t the only prosperous resident of Mt. Airy. Named after Episode 18 in Season 3, where Sheriff Andy and Deputy Barney discover a local goat has eaten a case of dynamite, this pub is relatively new to the Mayberry scene. Griffith wanted the museum to include items from his TV shows, along with memorabilia from his music career, Long said.
Mount Airy, North Carolina: Sleep in Andy Griffith's Boyhood Home
I chose to stay in town at the Heart & Soul Bed and Breakfast. When I pulled up to the four room B&B, Pam and Chris were sitting on the porch, ready to greet their guests. If you arrive outside of that time, special arrangements need to be made.
You can tour the town in a vintage squad car, see a replica jail, and enjoy places that remind you of Mayberry. The shop is both a fully-functioning barber shop and tourist draw. Stop by and meet Bill, son of original owner Russell Hiatt.

Since the museum opened, others have donated items and the collection continues to grow. The Surry Art Council supports the one room museum. Third, while Mount Airy is a functioning town, you see bits of Mayberry at every turn. The town, affectionately known as “Mayberry,” honors their hometown boy with attractions show fans love to visit. Molly Harrison is managing editor at OneBoat, publisher of OuterBanksThisWeek.com. This quaint North Carolina town was Andy Griffith’s childhood home and the inspiration for Mayberry in the beloved 1960s sitcom The Andy Griffith Show. There are two electric gates and a full circular driveway. Furthermore, the home is surrounded by manicured lawns, rose gardens, and lush landscaping. The backyard features a pool, tennis court, BBQ, and a cabana. Additionally, the cabana has 2.5 bathrooms, two changing rooms, a steam shower, and a kitchen. There is also a guest house with two bedrooms and two bathrooms.
It was really cool to see and to have a police car at the entrance. They were part of a tour going through but was neat to see it there. In addition to that one there were probably about 4 more cruising through town. The auction consists of 118 items, including furniture, fine art, collectibles, and several sets of fine china. For Mayberry fans hoping to add to their show memorabilia, the sale also includes a framed illustration of Thelma Lou with her on-screen boyfriend Barney Fife, as well a black-and-white photograph of the couple on the show.
He inspired numerous Lost Colony hands, including North Carolina native Leon Rippy, who would go on to be a star character actor, most notably in his roles in The Patriot, Saving Grace and Deadwood. You can rent the house by the night through the local Hampton Inn. Eat at the Snappy Lunch, visit the Courthouse, Floyd's Barbershop, Gomer/Goober's Gas Station and Emmit's Fixit Shop.
When not working she practices and teaches yoga and spends as much time as possible outside and in or on the water with her husband and two children. A native of Mt. Airy, N.C., Griffith started his acting career at UNC-Chapel Hill and came to Roanoke Island in the summers to act in The Lost Colony. He started as a soldier in 1947 but was promoted to the starring role of Sir Walter Raleigh two years later and played that role in the summer production until 1953. His first wife, Barbara Edwards, played opposite him as Eleanor Dare. In addition to Mayberry-themed attractions open year-round, thousands of fans visit Mount Airy each September for its Mayberry Days celebration.

We remember him appearing in a Brad Paisley music video, which was filmed on the Outer Banks. A Mayberry-themed mural spanning three walls was completed in summer 2013 by Greensboro’s Chip Holton, artist in residence at O.Henry and Proximity hotels. He never forgot it, that boy who never saw the sea before he came to their island, eventually becoming one with the locals. He was there for them in sickness and health in many ways, ranging from securing a jet ride home from Texas for a cancer-stricken beloved to visiting with a sick buddy in Chapel Hill to singing at a friend’s wedding. “He did a lot of things nobody ever saw,” one longtime island friend, Della Basnight, said.
